Who would have thought that SWOHSHL play would include a pond hockey game? Although that wasn’t exactly the case when Beavercreek met up with St. Xavier Sunday night at SportsPlus it wasn’t too far off. When you can’t see the red line, the blue lines, the face off dots, they don’t do an ice cut, and there’s a cool breeze in the air it’s pretty much outdoor hockey played inside. In spite of the conditions, the players and the referees were able to give it their best and provided a well played hockey game. The game was scoreless after one, but in the second period things got interesting. A shift after the Bombers scored to break the scoreless tie, Mason Mikesch got a goal on a pass from Cole Gutterman. St. X responded with another goal a few minutes later, but once again Creek quickly responded with an equalizer. This time it was Chad Peacock that put the biscuit in the basket on a pass from PJ Kosir. Unfortunately, the Bombers scored again late in the period and Creek was down 3-2 going into the intermission. As mentioned earlier no ice cut, just awkward silence. The Beavers came out strong in the third, however midway through the period the Bombers scored on a trick play that caught the Beavers off guard. Creek gave it their all but were not able to score another goal. Gram Doherty was solid between the pipes for the Beavers turning away 40 shots on the night. Next up for Beavercreek is a Tuesday afternoon skate at Nationwide Arena against Gahanna Lincoln.
