At the beginning of the season Coach Gutterman sets goals for the team and every year one of those goals is to win the SWOHSHL Gold Division. In only his third year coaching Beavercreek Varsity High School Hockey, his team has done it! After defeating the La Salle Lancers 7-1 Saturday night at the Kettering Rec, Creek finds themselves 9-0 in SWOHSHL play and are assured the best record in the SWOHSHL Gold Division. This is only the 3rd time in Creek Hockey’s 22 year history that the Beavers have won a division title. Because of this accomplishment the boys will be getting bumped up to the SWOHSHL Red Division next year, but they also will be getting bumped up to the Red Division end of year tournament this year and a chance to win the SWOHSHL outright.
The game against the Lancers got off to a somewhat pedestrian start as both teams tried to get a feel for the game. At about the 6 minute mark, Mason Mikesch gathered the puck off a big rebound and sent a cross ice pass to Braden Cox at the blue line, who then blistered a low shot past the Lancers’ net minder, giving Creek a 1-0 lead. Late in the second, Mikesch on a breakaway gave a nifty behind the back pass to Cole Gutterman who missed the net wide right, but Max Pezzot was there for the rebound and scored on a virtually empty net. Creek held on to a 2-0 lead at the first break.
The Beavers kept the momentum going and on their first shift of the second period got a goal from Cole Gutterman that was assisted by PJ Kosir. Creek struck again five minutes later when Mikesch gathered the puck at the red line, skated into the Lancers zone, and beat their goal tender top shelf stick side from the top of the circles, extending the Beavers lead to 4-0. Midway through the second, Tanner King picked up the puck deep in the corner and wristed a shot from an almost impossible angle that ended up in the back of the net. Creek held on for the rest of the period and had a comfortable 5-0 lead at the intermission.
A couple minutes into the third period, Pezzot again found himself the beneficiary of a rebounded shot from Gutterman, and Creek pushed their lead to 6-0. A few minutes later, Kosir sent a sweet pass through the neutral zone to a wide open Marshal Enfield, who then skated in and connected a low shot that beat the Lancers’ net minder glove side. The Lancers did get a goal late in the game to round out the scoring, but Creek held on from there and won 7-1. Kevin Bovair was between the pipes for the Beavers and turned away 16 shots on the night. Next up for your Battlin’ Beavers is another SWOHSHL match up against the Sycamore Aviators Friday night at 10 PM at the Kettering Rec. It will be Military Appreciation Night, so come out to salute our nation’s finest and cheer Creek on to another victory!
