3-5, 1-3, 1-7, 1-9, and 0-9. Those were the results the 5 times that our Creek Hockey seniors faced the Centerville Elks during their first three years. That was then, this is now. Saturday night, for what was their second game of Mayor’s Cup play, the boys were on a mission to finally turn the tables on the Elks. This is a different team then when our current seniors were freshman. This is also the third year under Coach Gutterman’s watchful eye and the boys have definitely bought in to what Coach is teaching. This is Creek Hockey!!
The game had a feel of a tournament game at the drop of the puck. These two teams definitely know each other. Many of them were teammates in the off season or in seasons gone by. There were many good opportunities on both ends, but it was the Beavers who drew first blood. Mason Mikesch took a clearing pass from Cole Gutterman, skated into the Elks zone and scored on a wrist shot over their goaltender’s right shoulder. The game remained at 1-0 until midway through the second period when the Beavers were rewarded for their relentless effort in front of the Elks’ net when Mikesch scored again on a feed from Gutterman. Creek had a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Things got pretty chippy in the third. With a little more than eight minutes remaining in the game, Creek was called for a 5 minute major high sticking penalty. Coach Gutterman wisely called a timeout to settle down the boys. Creek’s defense of PJ Kosir, Joey Duford, Alex Folga, and Braden Cox which was back stopped by Kevin Bovair in net had been playing solid to this point, but this was the time for them to shine. The Beavers were able to fend off the major and added an insurance goal in the waning seconds of the game, when Max Pezzot blocked a shot at the red line and Mikesch collected it and scored an empty net goal from the blue line, completing a hat trick on the evening. Bovair was stellar between the pipes and turned away 22 shots on the night. Next up for Creek is their third and final game of the Mayor’s Cup, which will be against the Alter Knights at 11 AM at South Metro Sports. This game will also be lived streamed by Lee Mowen on the South Metro YouTube channel. Come out and cheer your Beavercreek Beavers to victory!
