Beavercreek was paired against the Harborcreek Huskies on Monday afternoon for the third place game in the Walter F. Ehrnfelt Memorial Tournament at OBM Arena in Strongsville. The Beavers lost to the Huskies in round robin play, but really liked their chances this time around. Unlike when they played on Saturday, the officials were actually calling penalties this game, which spelled trouble for the Huskies. Late in the first on a 4-on-4 opportunity, Cole Gutterman took a clearing pass from PJ Kosir, skated into the Huskies zone, and blasted a wrist shot from the top of the circles past their goal tender, giving Creek at 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later while still on the power play advantage, Mason Mikesch sent a pass to the point to Kosir who then passed on to Braden Cox, and Cox beat the Huskies goal tender five hole, thanks in large part to a nice screen by Marshal Enfield. The Beavers held on from there and had a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
Midway through the second Gutterman intercepted an attempted clearing pass in the Huskies’ zone, did a dipsy-doo at the top the circles, and then tickled the twine with a nifty backhand shot, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead. The Huskies continued to make trips to the penalty box and Beavers made them pay late in the second when Joey Duford shot a blast from the point, Cox pounced on the rebound, and then slipped a shot past the Huskies’ netminder, giving Creek a commanding 4-0 lead. The Huskies finally did get on the board late in the period, but the Beavers had a 4-1 advantage at the second intermission.
The Beavers had a few more power play opportunities (boy did the Huskies like the sin bin!), but were not able to capitalize. Fortunately, it proved not the matter as the Beavers held on and won 4-2. Kevin Bovair was stellar again between the pipes for Creek and turned away 23 shots on the afternoon. The victory gave the Beavers a third place finish in the upper division tournament, which was very impressive considering that all of the other teams had a higher ranking. Next up for the Beavers is a SWOHSHL date against the Mason Comets Saturday night at 10 PM at the Kettering Rec Center. It is Senior Night, so come out to the rink and show your support for the class of 2019!
