Beavercreek was back on the ice Friday night for their first game of the Post Ohio Districts (POD) Tournament at the NTPRD Chiller in Springfield, which is being run by the Academy Hockey Club. Their opponent for the POD opener was their SWOHSHL rivals the La Salle Lancers. It has been two weeks since the Beavers lost in double overtime to Dublin Coffman in the OHSAA High School playoffs and they were hoping to get back in the win column.
The game started off kind of pedestrian with neither team getting many good scoring chances. However, in the closing minute of the first period, Joe Bordas buried a cross ice feed from Mason Mikesch that beat the Lancer’s goal tender, giving Creek a 1-0 lead. Midway through the second period Creek found themselves with a 5-on-3 opportunity, but PJ Kosir was denied with an excellent glove save by La Salle’s net minder. Kosir, however, was undeterred and moments later during a 5-on-4 opportunity connected off a pass from Joey Duford, extending the Beavers lead to 2-0. The Lancers continued their gritty physical play and were finally rewarded late in the second period, cutting Creek’s lead to 2-1 at the second intermission.
Early in the third period, Mikesch got a nice cross ice pass from Max Pezzot and snuck a shot under the goal tenders pads, pushing Creek’s lead out to 3-1. Later in the third the Beavers were again on a power play and were rewarded for their excellent passing when Cole Gutterman made a beautiful behind the net pass to Mikesch, who then beat the Lancer’s net minder on a bang-bang play. La Salle scored in the closing minutes of the game during a power play of their own, but the Beavers won the game 4-2. Kevin Bovair was solid as usual between the pipes for the Beavers and turned away 26 shots on the night. Next up for Creek is a game against the Alter Knights Saturday at 3:40 at the NTPRD Chiller.
