Creek Falls to Alter in OHSAA Tournament

Beavercreek faced Alter in an opening round OHSAA tournament match up at the Nationwide Ice Haus on Saturday afternoon.  This was the third straight year that the Beavers faced the Knights in OHSAA tournament, having lost to them the previous two times.  Creek was hopeful that this time would be different, largely due to splitting two games against Alter this season and having won in their last meeting 1-0.

Both teams were ready to go at the drop of the puck, but Alter drew first blood four minutes in to take a 1-0 lead.  The Beavers responded a few minutes later when Mason Mikesch put in a rebound off of a PJ Kosir shot from close to the blue line.  The game remained tied at one at the end of the first period.  The game stayed tied until Alter took back the lead on a goal at the 4:37 mark in the second period.  Later on in the second the Knights crashed the net and were awarded a penalty shot when a Creek player covered up the puck in the crease.  Alter converted on the ensuing penalty shot to go up 3-1, which is where the score remained going into the second intermission.  The Beavers came out with great intensity in the third and were rewarded when PJ Kosir scored on a shot from the top of the circles, thanks in large part to the traffic Creek had in front of Alter’s net.  Creek remained down 3-2 late into the third when Alter scored again and pushed their lead to 4-2.  With a little more than a minute to play, the Beavers pulled their netminder Gram Doherty to bring on an extra attacker.  Unfortunately, the tactic did not produce the desired results and the Knights ended up tacking on three empty net goals.  Doherty was solid between the pipes for Beavercreek and ended up turning away 33 Alter shots.

The Beavers ended the season with a 16-14-2-1 record.  They had many successes during the year including a 3rd place finish at the Miami Valley Freeze, 2nd place finishes at Frozen Creek and at the Mayor’s Cup, and a 1st place finish in the SWOHSHL Gold Division tournament.  Good luck to our outgoing seniors: Nick Belmonte, Gram Doherty, Chad Peacock, Braden Sanders, Shane Sanders, and manager Maggie Hergenrather!!
