Beavercreek faced the Sycamore Aviators Sunday afternoon at Northlands Ice Center in the SWOHSHL Gold Division Championship game. Creek had the opportunity to win their second SWOHSHL championship in as many years and they were ready to go at the drop of the puck. Before most of the fans could get situated into their standing locations, Creek’s Max Pezzot scored a goal on a pass from Cole Gutterman. A little over a minute later, the Beavers tallied another goal, this one by Tanner King which once again was assisted by Gutterman. Creek found themselves up 2-0 less than two minutes into the game and continued to put the pressure on the Avs. Beavercreek’s relentless effort paid off again in the second period when Pezzot completed a “Max Trick” and scored his second goal of the game, this time on an assist from Mason Mikesch and King. Less than a minute later, Mikesch intercepted a Sycamore pass at the blue line and promptly put the biscuit in the basket giving Creek a 4-0 lead. Mikesch tallied another goal late in the second period on a pass from Chad Peacock and Gutterman, which ended up being the 5th and final goal of the game. The Beavers net minder, Gram Doherty was simply sensational between the pipes and ended up turning away all 29 Sycamore shots. This was Doherty’s 5th shutout of the season, which earns him a spot in the OHSAA State Record Book. Next up for your Battlin’ Beavers is their opening round game of the OHSAA state tournament against the Alter Knights on Saturday February 17th at 3:45 at the Nationwide Ice Haus.
