Beavers Beat Rangers 6-2, Play For POD Championship Sunday!

Beavercreek faced off against the Indian Hill Rangers for their third and final game of round robin play in the inaugural POD Tournament Saturday night at the NTPRD Chiller.  The Beavers and Rangers were knotted at 7 points after their first two games and the winner of this game would get a chance to play in the POD Tournament championship game on Sunday.

Creek drew first blood midway through the first period when Mason Mikesch scored off a pass from behind the net from Cole Gutterman.  Seconds later after the ensuing face off, Mikesch scored again off a pass from Gutterman, pushing the Beavers lead to 2-0.  Later in the first, during a penalty kill Mikesch scored again off a pass from Gutterman, giving Mikesch a natural hat trick, his 10th hat trick of the season, and more importantly giving Creek a commanding 3-0 lead at the first intermission.  With that first period outburst, Mikesch now has 58 goals on the season has broken the single season goal record for Beavercreek High School Hockey!

In the opening seconds of the second period, however, the Rangers got on the board, cutting Creek’s lead to 3-1.  Late in the second period on a power play the Beavers answered with another goal, when Gutterman scored off a sweet pass from pass from Mikesch.  Hey, who can blame them for trying something different for a change?  Creek held on from their and had a 4-1 lead at the second intermission.

The Beavers found themselves a man down early in the third period and the Rangers made them pay, cutting Creek’s lead to 4-2.  Fortunately, midway through the third Gutterman won a face off draw cleanly back to Braden Cox who then promptly buried a shot from the top of the circles, extending their lead to 5-2.  Creek put the game out of reach a few minutes later when Max Pezzot tallied a goal off a pass from Gutterman.  Yes, that was 5 assists on the night for Gutterman along with a goal, giving him a 6 point night!  That ended being the last goal of the night and Beavers won the game 6-2.  Kevin Bovair was solid between the pipes for the Beavers and turned away 32 shots on the night.

Creek ended up 2nd after pool play and now have a date against the Alter Knights on Sunday at 5 PM for the POD Tournament championship.  Come on out and cheer your Battlin’ Beavers to victory!!

Creek Skates to a 1-1 Draw Against Alter

Beavercreek had a second game round robin match up of the POD Tournament against their SWOHSHL foes the Alter Knights on Saturday afternoon at the NTPRD Chiller.  The Knights to this point have been perfect in the tournament, securing all possible 10 points in their first two games and were not even scored against.  The Beavers knew that they need to play well against the Knights if they had any hopes of playing for the championship on Sunday.

This was a beautiful game to watch as both teams displayed grit, speed, and determination up and down the ice.  The teams had a number of grade ‘A’ scoring chances, but both goal tenders did a fantastic job to deny those attempts.  For Creek, it was freshman Ben Duford who got the start in net and he was stellar between the pipes, turning away 19 shots on the day.  The game remained scoreless until midway through the third period when the Knights pounced on an errant pass deep Beavers zone and scored, taking a 1-0 lead.  Creek kept the pressure on, however, and were finally rewarded late in the third on a power play opportunity when Mason Mikesch connected on a pass from PJ Kosir, tying the game at 1-1.  Both teams had more chances, but neither were able to score, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.  This was truly a great game to watch and hopefully was a prequel to the championship game on Sunday!

Next up for the Beavers is a Saturday night affair against the Indian Hill Rangers, which will be Creek’s final game of round robin play.
