The Battling Beavers varsity ice hockey team went 3-1 on the weekend and brought home the 3rd place trophy from the Walter F Ehrnfelt Memorial High School Hockey Tournament held Jan. 16-19, 2015 in Strongsville Ohio.
Beavercreek played the Kalamozoo (Michigan) Blades Saturday morning Jan 17 and fell 2-6 in a battle that saw sophomore Ethan Green scoring on an assist from senior Jake Weideling, and senior and Co-Captain Austin (AC) Coleman scoring on an assist from senior Ryan Williford. Creek rebounded in game 2 Saturday night with a solid 4-2 win over the Fairview (Pennsylvania) Tigers. Beavercreek allowed only 16 shots on goal with Ryan Williford adding several defensive blocked shots to his assist in game 1. AC Coleman led all scorers with 2 goals and 1 assist, with Ethan Green putting up a goal and an assist, junior Jack Belmonte scoring, and junior Jonnie Ives, senior and Assistant Captain Brandon Sanders, and Jake Weideling adding an assist each. Junior and Co-Captain Brian Daniels had 14 saves and recorded his 3000th career save to build on his OSHAA career record.
Game 3 on Sunday Jan 18 was a nail-biter with Beavecreek eeking out a 5-4 win over the Strongsville (Ohio) Mustangs. The game saw three Creek players register 3 points each: Jack Belmonte rang up a hat trick with 3 goals, while Jake Weideling had a goal and 2 assists, and Brandon Sanders tallied 3 assists. AC Coleman also contributed 2 assists in the win. (The team would also like to thank Nana Weideling for graciously opening her home and providing a great team dinner to the players and their families Sunday night. Everyone sincerely appreciated the hospitality and warmth you shared!)
After narrowly missing the finals, Beavercreek again faced and defeated Strongsville 6-3 Monday to take 3rd place in their division in the tournament. Jake Weideling had a whopping 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists), and four players has 2 points: Ethan Green 1 goal, 1 assist; Jack Belmonte 1 goal, 1 assist; AC Coleman 1 goal, 1 assist; Brandon Sanders 2 assists. Sophomore Nick Martin scored and Jonnie Ives added an assist. Hats off to Head Coach Sean Broderick and Assistant Coach Josh Baldwin (who also led last year’s team to a 1st place finish), and Assistant Coach Lee McClure.
Beavercreek plays Sycamore Friday Jan 23 at 7pm at Sports Plus in Cincinnati, and finally return home to the Kettering Rec Center Saturday Jan 24 at 5pm in a combination Pack The House/Pink In The Rink night to support Breast Cancer research. Mark your calendars right now for what promises to be an electric atmosphere at the Kettering Rec this coming Saturday evening! Creek also plays Sunday Jan 25 at 11am vs Sycamore at the Kettering Rec Center on Teacher Appreciation Day.
