Beavers Fall to Elks, Take 2nd Place in MVF Tourney

Beavercreek squared off against the Centerville Elks for the finals of the Miami Valley Freeze tournament Sunday morning at Hobart Arena.  The Beavers and Elks faced each last weekend during the Mayor’s Cup, where Creek was victorious on their way to a first place finish.  The Elks were looking to take advantage of a Beavers roster that was depleted by injuries/illness and square the season series.  It was Creek, however, that drew first blood when late in the first period PJ Kosir took a pass to the point from Joe Bordas and blasted a low shot from the blue line through of a nice screen by Alex Folga that beat the Elks’ goal tender.  Unfortunately, the lead did not last long as the Elks got an equalizer on a power play goal in the final minute of the period, and the game was tied at 1-1 after the first.

Centerville got a power play goal early in the second period and then got another tally to push their lead to 3-1.  Midway through the second period, Joey Duford gathered the puck just outside of Centerville’s blue line, skated to the left of the net, and beat the Elks’ goal tender low blocker side, cutting the deficit to 3-2.  However, late in the second period Centerville scored again and took a 4-2 lead at the intermission.

The Beavers pressed hard in the third and had a number of great scoring opportunities but were not able to draw any closer.  They ended up taking 42 shots on the Elks’ net minder on the day, but were only able to beat him twice.  Freshman Ben Duford turned away 29 shots on the day and played very well between the pipes for the Beavers the entire tournament, filling in for injured senior Kevin Bovair.  Although the Beavers fell short this weekend, they should be proud with how well they played and be happy with their second place finish.  Next up for Creek, is a SWOHSHL game against the Talawanda Braves Friday night at 7 PM at Goggin Arena.
