Creek Defeats Troy 8-4 in MVF Opener

Beavercreek faced off against the Troy Trojans Friday afternoon for opening round play of the Miami Valley Freeze tournament at Hobart Arena.  Creek was hoping to get off to a good start in the tournament as well as continue their undefeated SWOHSHL play.  The Beavers had a number of scoring chances early, but were not able to score until Mason Mikesch got one past the Trojans’ goal tender off a pass from Cole Gutterman and Joey Duford.  Unfortunately, the Trojans came back with an equalizer less than two minutes later, and the game was tied at 1 after the first period.

The Trojans got another goal early in the second to take the lead, but the Beavers responded with not one but two goals in less than a minute time span to take back the lead.  The equalizer was scored by Max Pezzot off a sweet behind the net pass from Gutterman, while the go ahead goal was scored on a tip in by Mikesch off a shot by Pezzot that was fed by Gutterman.  Late in the second period, Gutterman snuck in a rebound off a shot by Mikesch past the goal tender to extend their lead to 4-2.  Less than 15 seconds later Mikesch scored again off a pass from Gutterman, which completed a hat trick for Mikesch and gave Creek a 5-2 lead at the intermission.

The Trojans scored less than a minute into the third period, cutting the Creek lead to two.  The Beavers came back with a goal a few minutes later when Alex Folga sent a laser from the blue line off a pass from Marshal Enfield past the Trojans’ goal tender, giving them a 6-3 advantage.  Midway through the third period the Trojans got another goal, but the Beavers responded shortly after that with a goal by Enfield that was assisted by Tanner King.  Gutterman got a power play goal late in the third period that was assisted by PJ Kosir and Mikesch, which ended being the final tally of the game.  The line of Mikesch-Gutterman-Pezzot ended up with 6 goals and 8 assists for the game.  Ben Duford got his first Beavercreek Varsity Hockey start in net for the Beavers and turned away 19 shots.  Next up for Creek is a Saturday morning affair against the Findlay Trojans at Hobart Arena.
