What a difference a day makes. After laying a proverbial egg in the opener of the Mayor’s Cup, Beavercreek put on a defensive clinic and edged the Alter Knights 1-0 Friday night. Both goal tenders were on their game, but Creek’s Gram Doherty was slightly better in turning away 27 shots to record his second shutout win of the season. The lone goal occurred midway through the third period, when freshman Mason Mikesch scored his first career BHS goal on a feed from Nate Schivelbein. Beavercreek ensured that the one goal would be enough through their relentless defensive effort that shut down Alter’s primary scorers. Although it was truly a team effort, Creek’s defenseman captain PJ Kosir, Joey Duford, Nick Belmonte, and Alex Folga set the tone. This was the first time that the Beavers have defeated the Knights in the past three season, including two season ending losses in OHSAA tournament play. Next up for Creek is a 7 PM affair Saturday night against the Troy Bruins at South Metro Sports. The game will be live streamed on the South Metro Sports YouTube Channel.
